Sardinian traditional costume was born like most of the popular costume in Europe, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Mediterranean influences, the abolition of special laws connecting the wearing of certain garments to social class, and the exquisite newly available fabrics from Catalonia and other states, allowed Sardinian artisans to create traditional costumes with an incredible variety of colors and stylings. Its today version called "Ethnic Suit" is worn also by artists and politicians .
The fabrics are usually velvet or moleskin. The traditional colors are dark brown, black, green, and grey. The jacket is single-breasted with 2 or 3 buttons and 4 appliquéd pockets in the front. In the back it has a half belt, bellows and little bows. The shirt is white made of cotton or linen with a small collar, and sometimes with a pleating in the front. Trousers used to be riding-school style but today are preferred just with a tight bottom so you can wear boots over them. Pockets have little embroideries along their edge. The footwear is usually hand made boots.
